“Four hours four minutes, it was great, great experience.” That’s how Buddy Marucci repmembers the day he walked inside the ropes at Augusta National in 1996, shoulder to shoulder with Arnold Palmer.
For Marucci, that span of time became the measure of a dream fulfilled, and a memory he cherishes to this day.
Marucci earned his Masters invite by finishing runner-up to Tiger Woods in the 1995 U.S. Amateur. When the chairman asked if he’d mind playing with “the other Pennsylvania amateur champion,” Marucci didn’t hesitate.

“Mr. Chairman, if you're asking me if I would like to play with Arnold Palmer tomorrow, I played here a hundred times, I'd want to play with him every time.”
But when the pairings came out and his name appeared beside Palmer’s, Marucci described it as “quite a great moment”. He decided he would walk to the first tee early, alone, to avoid walking into that massive crowd beside the legend..
As crowds crowded down the fairway, Marucci stood near the tee area trying to stay composed. Then came Palmer through the madding ranks. He walked up to the tee,, looked at Marucci, and gave him a quiet signal: “Come on over.”
Palmer draped his arms around Marucci’s shoulders, looked him in the eye, and said simply:
“Buddy, this is going to be one of the greatest days of your life. If there’s anything I can do for you, you just let me know.”
What followed wasn’t about birdies or pars, it was about calm, connection, belonging. For a nervous amateur standing in the shadow of a legend, Palmer’s gesture didn’t tell him how to swing; it told him he belonged at Augusta. That, for Marucci, made those four hours and four minutes more than just a round of golf, it made them a moment he would never forget.
