When former World Amateur No. 1 Luke Clanton was asked to name golf's next big star, he didn't hesitate.

Clanton appeared on the Smylie Show on Wednesday, where he reflected on his time playing alongside Tyler Weaver at Florida State.

“The first time we played together, we played with a lot of golfers. and we’re all like, ‘Oh, that’s good.’ This was the first time where I was like, ‘D***, like that is different.’ He was hitting it 330 on a line. And then his wedges were really good, and I was like, That guy is legit.’”

For a college player to drive 300 yards is exceptionally impressive. We've seen such averages before from the likes of Scottie Scheffler on the PGA Tour, making Weaver an incredibly impressive player. In his first year at Florida State, he won ACC Freshman of the Year.

He even made his debut at the U.S. Open last year against the likes of Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau, and Brooks Koepka. So hearing Clanton speak glowingly about Weaver wasn't a surprise.

Luke Clanton’s Time at Florida State Set the Stage for That Reaction

Luke Clanton and Tyler Weaver were teammates on the Florida State University men’s golf team during the 2023–2024 and 2024–2025 seasons. Both were regular members of the Seminoles’ lineup during that period.

In 2025, each earned a spot on the All-ACC Men’s Golf Team. In June of the same year, both were recognized as Golfweek All-Americans, Clanton as a First Team selection and Weaver receiving Honorable Mention honors.

Their contributions also aligned in competition. In October 2024, they won their respective matches at the East Lake Cup as Florida State defeated Ohio State.

A year later, in February, they were part of the lineup that led Florida State to a comeback win at the Watersound Invitational, where Clanton claimed the individual title and Weaver finished tied for sixth.
