Playing golf in summer heat is a performance problem as much as a comfort one. PGA Tour players have a specific answer for it, and it comes in liquid form.
The Tour's own nutritionist has pulled back the curtain on exactly what pros are drinking during hot rounds and why it works.
PGA Tour nutritionist Ryan Harmon shared the details of how players fuel during high-heat rounds in a piece published by Golf Digest. The go-to product on Tour is Momentous Fuel, a powder mixed into water bottles, consumed roughly every four holes.
"The goal is to keep energy up, stay hydrated, and avoid gastrointestinal distress," Harmon said. "The best on-course fuel provides fluids, easily digestible carbohydrates, and electrolytes."

Players often choose drinks instead of food in hot weather because the heat reduces their appetite. As a result, many do not eat enough and may run low on energy by the final holes of the round.
The main ingredient in Momentous Fuel is isomaltulose, a type of carbohydrate that provides steady energy over a longer period.
"It's a low glycemic index carbohydrate derived from beet sugar that is gentle on the stomach and provides energy without spiking blood glucose," Harmon said.
Golfers need steady energy to stay focused during a round. Isomaltulose helps by releasing energy slowly instead of causing a quick boost followed by a drop.
More importantly, the drink also contains fructose, which helps the body use carbohydrates more effectively during long hours on the course.
Why electrolytes are important for golfers in hot weather
Staying hydrated is only one benefit of the drink. The electrolytes in it also help players perform better in tough conditions.
For instance, a drink like Momentous Fuel contains sodium, potassium, magnesium, and zinc. These minerals help the body stay hydrated, support muscles, and keep players feeling strong and performing well during a round.
"Sodium regulates fluid balance and enables electrical signaling," Harmon said. "Potassium works with sodium to maintain fluid balance. Magnesium powers electrolyte pumps, reduces muscle cramps, and supports recovery. Zinc aids muscle repair and energy metabolism."
Together, these minerals help the body stay hydrated and perform well during four to five hours of playing in hot conditions.
