Shane Lowry knew exactly what was at stake when he walked up the 18th fairway at Bethpage Black. The noise, the setting, and the pressure, but everything paid off when he took that last shot.
Lowry admitted on “The Late Late Show” on December 16, 2025, that the nerves were impossible to ignore. “It’s funny when you’re in situations like that, you actually become quite aware of what’s going on,” he said. “Obviously, I was very nervous.”

As Lowry walked down with his caddie, Darren Reynolds, he made his mindset clear. “I said, ‘I have the opportunity to do something very, very cool here, very special.’ And basically, let’s go and do it.”
“Honestly, it’s the most pressure I’ve ever felt,” he admitted. “I somehow managed to roll the putt in.” Watching the replay of that shot must be nostalgic for Shane Lowry, like how smooth it was to put the ball in the hole. “I was shaking at this stage. Properly shaking,” Lowry said with a smile.
The release after the putt dropped was just as unfiltered. “To be fair, I was shaking afterwards too.” And talking about the moment, Lowry admitted that memory is more important than anything else.
More Than Celebration Memory is Important
The celebration was never the point. The memory itself is what lingers. “It was a memory that I’ll have forever,” Lowry said. “It was very special.” And the celebration?
Well, Lowry went through the tunnel at one point and tied up the scorecard for the number of Europeans won. Lowry said, "Yeah, they had 15 down, so I changed that to 16. That we've won. And um yeah, we had a good night that night."
After birdying the 18th hole in his singles match against Russell Henley, he erupted in celebration. With that, Europe secured its first win on foreign soil since 2012.
