Trey Mullinax breaks silence after six-month PGA Tour suspension for violating anti-doping policy

Trey Mullinax didn't dispute the test result. He didn't deflect blame. He released a statement, took the suspension, and put his name to every word of it.
The PGA Tour announced Wednesday, July 29, 2026, that Mullinax has been suspended for six months for violating the Tour's Anti-Doping Policy after testing positive for a substance prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
He is eligible to return January 16, 2027. The Tour confirmed Mullinax cooperated fully throughout the process and accepted the suspension.

Mullinax addressed the situation directly in a written statement released by the PGA Tour.
"I take full responsibility for what happened," he said, according to the PGA Tour. "I recently used a medication to treat a condition I was originally diagnosed with in college without seeking approval under the TOUR's Anti-Doping Policy. My lack of knowledge is not an excuse. It was my responsibility to know the rules before taking any medication, and I failed to do so. I want to be absolutely clear: I have never taken any substance with the intention of gaining a competitive advantage."
The medication was tied to a condition Mullinax said he was first diagnosed with during his college years. He did not name the substance or the condition in his statement.
Mullinax, 34, has had a limited 2026 season. He made two PGA Tour starts and one Korn Ferry Tour appearance before his last competitive round at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans on April 27. He finished 150th in the FedExCup last year and entered 2026 on conditional status.
He is believed to be the ninth player suspended since the PGA Tour began drug testing in 2008, and the first since Byeong Hun An in October 2023.
Trey Mullinax and his suspension put him among a short list of PGA Tour anti-doping cases.
The previous suspension, An's in October 2023, came after the South Korean golfer tested positive for a prohibited substance contained in over-the-counter cough medicine purchased in Korea.
He received a three-month ban, half the length of Mullinax's six-month suspension.
Mullinax's case involved a medication for an ongoing medical condition rather than a one-time remedy. He did not contest the result.
In his statement, Mullinax said he plans to return. "Golf has given me so much, and I never want one mistake to define the respect I have for the game or for the people who support me," he said. "I look forward to competing again in 2027."
His one career PGA Tour win came at the 2022 Barbasol Championship. His return date is Jan. 16, 2027.
