“Tried to Make a Mess”: Scottie Scheffler Battles to Survive the Genesis Invitational Cut

Feb 21, 2026, 2:12 AM CUT

After his opening round on Thursday left him outside the cut line, Scottie Scheffler was in danger of an early exit at the Genesis Invitational. He responded with a second-round 68 clutch to reach even par (142) and move into a tie for 43rd.

The world no. 1 recorded four birdies across his final 10 holes, including a seven-foot par putt on the 18th that secured his place for the weekend.

Reflecting on his finish on the 18th hole of the second round, Scheffler spoke about the moment on Friday that secured his place for the weekend.

"I tried to make a mess of a pretty basic chip there on 18. Caught it a little thin and just dug in, so it was nice to be able to hole a putt and get another two cracks at the course," he told reporters.

Acknowledging the mistake and the putt that kept him inside the cut line, the four-time major winner said, “Yeah, I started the day not where I wanted to, but yeah, battled and it looks like I get another couple rounds to see what I can do.”

By making the cut after the second round, Scheffler extended his active streak to 68 consecutive cuts, the longest ongoing run on the PGA Tour.

However, he remains behind Tiger Woods’ record of 142 consecutive cuts, leaving a gap to close.

Scheffler also revealed what he did differently between the rounds ahead of his return on Friday.

Scottie Scheffler reveals what he did between the rounds

After recording what was reportedly his worst start through 10 holes of a PGA Tour round, the 2025 Open champion was asked what he did differently between rounds, to which Scottie Scheffler gave a brief response, saying he “tried to sleep. Fast.”

At the 2026 Genesis Invitational, Scheffler encountered a weather delay that affected his start at Riviera, contributing to his position through the opening stretch of the first round.

He teed off later in the day following a rain delay earlier in the morning, with wind and course conditions influencing play and placing him near the bottom of the leaderboard at one stage.

Conditions shifted by the time he returned for the next round, allowing him to recover ground and move back toward the cut line.

He posted a 3-under 68 to reach even par for the tournament and make the cut on the number, securing his place in the weekend rounds.
