Truth Behind Bryson DeChambeau’s Lead Tape Trick Spotted at ANGC That Sparked Fan Debate

Apr 7, 2026, 2:00 PM CUT

Bryson DeChambeau drew attention during practice at Augusta National. Fans spotted lead tape on the crown of his Krank Formula Fire. The setup raised questions as fans immediately started debating.

When weight is added higher on the clubhead, it brings the launch down without increasing spin in a way. This means the ball can travel on a lower path while still holding its line.

That directly connects to the conditions at The Masters Tournament. Augusta is known for the wind that shifts direction, which can move the ball in the air. A lower launch helps reduce that effect and keeps the shot on target.

At the same time, the amount of tape used is not enough to shift the center of gravity in a major way. Instead, it works as a small adjustment to the club’s launch behavior.

The two-time major winner is using the tape to lower launch and maintain control in the conditions expected at Augusta.

Following that, the setup drew reactions across golf fans when CBS Sports shared Bryson DeChambeau’s practice shots ahead of The Masters Tournament on X.

“Bryson DeChambeau is using lead tape on the top of the crown of his club as he hits practice shots, something @MichaelBreed says he’s never seen before,” read the caption.

Fans Push Back on Bryson DeChambeau Lead Tape Debate

"What???? Lead tape on clubs is as old as time!" one fan dismissed the reaction, saying it has always been part of the game.

Another backed that up with personal experience from years of use. “Lead tape on golf clubs has been used for decades. My dad used it a lot. I used it occasionally, as did others.”

One user tried to explain the intent behind the setup. “He’s looking to add spin and a touch of right bias. Just happens to be the only player in history who can stomach looking down on lead tape,” they commented.

Others commented on Michael Breed's observation. “@MichaelBreed has to get out more or at least remember that golf wasn't invented in 2002,” commented the user.

“He’s been doing this for well over a year. If @MichaelBreed hasn’t seen it, then he hasn’t been paying attention,” said another.

Breed works as a golf instructor and media analyst. He has spent years teaching the game and has held roles at clubs such as Sunningdale Golf Club and Birchwood Country Club, along with earlier experience at Augusta National Golf Club and Deepdale Golf Club.

Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau is riding high on back-to-back wins at LIV Golf Hong Kong and South Africa. So what’s your take on Bryson DeChambeau’s lead tape setup at The Masters Tournament?
