The bird is fine.
Ryan Gerard’s tee shot on the par-3 seventh at the 2026 Cognizant Classic had everyone doing a double-take.
But what fans thought they saw and what actually happened were two very different things.
On February 26, 2026, Gerard went to the tee at the par-3 seventh hole at PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. It was the first round of the Cognizant Classic, and he hit his shot toward the green. At that moment, a bird flew across the ball’s path.
It looked like his ball smacked a bird right out of the sky, and somehow it still landed on the green about 35 feet from the hole. Gerard took two putts and made par, then walked to the next hole.
Later, PGA Tour broadcaster Smylie Kaufman cleared things up on X.
“I can report… the bird is ALIVE and well. Being told the bird pulled a 360 madden juke on the golf ball. May have lost a feather, but the young fella is flying free.”
According to the Rules of Golf set by the United States Golf Association (USGA), if a golfer's shot happens to intersect with a bird’s flight path, there's no penalty for him. Instead, he should play the ball from where it lies if it falls to the ground.
NUCLR Golf posted the actual footage on X. The fans compared Gerard to Randy Johnson, who famously hit a bird during a spring training game in March 2001. also fans started showing their concern for the bird that came fast, too.
The Bird Ducked and Gerard’s Divot Did the Rest
At the last second, the bird dropped lower than the ball and kept flying. What looked like feathers in the air was actually grass that flew up when Gerard hit the ball.
The ball tracker showed the shot went to the left of the bird. When people watched the video frame by frame, they could see the bird still flying on the left side of the screen. But it was confirmed that no bird was hurt.
Gerard made two putts from 35 feet on the seventh hole and saved par. It was one of the few good moments of his day.
