South Africa’s Yurav Premlall created history with his maiden DP World Tour title. His 14-stroke victory at Barcelona trails only Tiger Woods' 15-stroke U.S. Open win.

The 22-year-old secured the Catalunya Championship at Real Club de Golf El Prat in Barcelona, Spain with a historic winning margin. The career-changing victory was powered by his remarkable 28-under-par score, which left the rest of the field behind.

“I have no words. I have worked so hard to get into this position, and it’s so rewarding to finally see the results of it,” said Premlall after securing the title.

“The last eight or nine months have been such a struggle just to build myself onto a platform where I know I can give myself a chance to win, and to end up in this position, I’m just so grateful, and it’s a dream come true,” he added.

Premlall was six shots off the lead after shooting a 70 after the first round. However, his following rounds of 64, 63, and 63 produced a final score of 28-under par, which also ranks among the lowest 72-hole totals in DP World Tour history.

Fellow South African Shaun Norris finished runner-up at 14-under, leaving Premlall 14 shots clear of the field. The margin broke Ernie Els' previous DP World Tour-era record of 13 shots and was bettered only by Tiger Woods' 15-shot victory at the 2000 U.S. Open.

Back-to-back course-record rounds over the weekend helped Premlall overcome three bogeys and a double bogey while making 33 birdies for the week. The victory earned him a $50,000 bonus and the biggest payday of his career, around €398,000.

Premlall holds the record for the largest winning margin at a non-major DP World Tour event, but Woods was on another level at the 2000 U.S. Open.

Woods came into the major three weeks after becoming the first back-to-back winner of the Memorial. Another record was on the way for the Cypress-born golfer.

"If the conditions are dry and windy, then it's a matter of patience," Jack Nicklaus said before the tournament.

"But if they're throwing darts, then Tiger will shoot a tremendously low score, no matter what the conditions are. And he'll probably break the Open record."

Woods won his first U.S. Open by 15 shots over Ernie Els and Miguel Ángel Jiménez. He was the only player to finish under par at 12-under and broke the previous major championship record margin of 13 shots set by Old Tom Morris in 1862.

Following the win, Woods went on to win four majors in a row, a feat popularly known as the “Tiger Slam.”
