Visuals Confirm Jordan Spieth Is Considering a Big Change Ahead of the Travelers Championship

Jordan Spieth spent Wednesday morning testing a mallet putter at the Travelers Championship pro-am.

By the afternoon, he was back practicing with his T.P. Mills blade. Which one starts on Thursday is still an open question.

Spieth was spotted using a black L.A.B. Golf VZN.1i putter during Wednesday's pro-am at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. It remains unclear which putter will be in the bag when he tees it up Thursday.

Later that day, Skratch's Riley Hamel observed him practicing with the T.P. Mills blade he switched to at the 2025 WM Phoenix Open.

Spieth has not won on the PGA Tour since the 2022 RBC Heritage. Before the Travelers Championship, he was 57th in Strokes Gained: Putting. He was also ranked 117th in overall putting and 110th in putting from 4 to 8 feet.

Spieth has used a heel-toe weighted blade for most of his career, winning three majors with a Scotty Cameron 009. The L.A.B. putter operates on a different philosophy, lie-angle balance, designed to reduce the tendency of the head to twist open or closed during the stroke.

Spieth was using a 35-inch version during the pro-am. Golfweek reported that L.A.B. quickly built a 35.5-inch putter with a 69-degree lie angle and got it to the course before the round was over.

The T.P. Mills Trad II putter that Jordan Spieth began using at the 2025 WM Phoenix Open is a lot like his Scotty Cameron putter. Both putters have a carbon-steel build, a raw finish, a SuperStroke grip, and a plumber's neck design.

The main difference is the loft. The T.P. Mills putter has a loft of about 2.5 to 3 degrees, while his regular putter has about 4 degrees of loft.

The change in putters shows that Jordan Spieth has been trying to improve his putting. He first explained why he switched to the T.P. Mills putter in February 2025.

Jordan Spieth Explained Why He Changed Putters When He First Used The T.P. Mills

In February 2025, Jordan Spieth surprised many golf fans when he used the T.P. Mills Trad II putter at TPC Scottsdale and shot a first-round 68. He said the switch was mainly to try something new, not a permanent change.

"I'm just kind of messing with some, I've got a few options, just trying to mess a little with how it sits on the ground, the draft on the bottom of the putter, see if I can get it to where it sets aligning a little better and off the ball is a little bit smoother," Spieth said, as reported by PGA Tour in february 2025.

"I may use a few options this week. I may stick with the one I did today. We'll see."

He also framed the search in broader terms. "I'm just trying to figure out what helps me stroke it the best, and I'll use that one," Spieth said.

The T.P. Mills Trad II came out of Spieth's own club stash at home. His friend and master club builder Frank Hartwick connected him with T.P. Mills craftsman David Mills, who built the putter from scratch based on Spieth's weight and length specifications.
