'Was He Penalized?' Fans React After Pro Misses Ball Entirely Following Sudden Interruption

Mar 21, 2026, 6:25 AM CUT

During a DP World Tour round, Keita Nakajima found himself at the center of an unusual moment after he swung and completely missed the ball.

The clip was later shared on X on Friday with the caption: “He misses the ball. Have you ever seen this before… 🤯” and it quickly caught attention.

And right after Nakajima looked around him, trying to find the source of the distraction. Commentators speculated it could have been a wasp that moved near his neck.

Nakajima addressed the moment soon after, saying, “Something distracted me,” though it was not clear what caused the interruption. Replays showed him starting his swing before pulling away above the ball, adding to the confusion.

As the discussion continued, commentators questioned whether there was intent to hit the ball, an important factor in determining if it should count as a stroke. Officials reviewed the situation while play continued.

The moment left both the broadcast team and fans uncertain, with many asking the same question: Should it count as a shot?

Fans Question Ruling After Keita Nakajima’s Missed Shot on DP World Tour

The moment quickly moved online, where fans reacted from different angles: some questioned the ruling, while others described the shot through comparisons and observations.

Some fans directly questioned the ruling, writing, “Was he penalised?” As noted above, there was no penalty handed to Nakajima. That might have been so because Nakajima looked to pull away from striking the ball, meaning he may not have intended to hit the ball. As the rule clearly states, if there was an intention to hit the ball and player misses, there would have been a penalty.

Others pointed to a possible distraction, with one saying, “He didn’t miss the ball purposefully though did he, someone coughed and clearly distracted him, I think this post is misleading.” At the same time, reports a cough distracting him weren't confirmed.

Some reacted by comparing the moment to everyday experiences, as one fan wrote, “Bro whiffed like my dog chasing a squirrel.”

Others focused on how unusual the moment looked, with a comment reading, “OMG that whiff is hilarious! Haven't seen one quite like that in ages 😂”

At the same time, some raised a broader question around such situations, adding, “I always wondered what would happen if a cough or sneeze happened.”
