Watch: Lee Trevino Caddied for Arnold Palmer and Delivered One of Golf’s Funniest Rounds

Lee Trevino built his legacy as one of golf’s great showmen, a six-time major champion whose humour was as sharp as his ball-striking. His personality produced countless unforgettable moments, from tossing a rubber snake at Jack Nicklaus at the 1971 U.S. Open to trading jokes with fans and fellow pros.

That same effortless comedy returned in a classic PGA Tour commercial, where Trevino stepped in as Arnold Palmer’s caddie, and delivered one of the funniest on-course exchanges ever caught on camera.

The shoot captured the two legends together in a relaxed setting and created one of the most entertaining on-course exchanges between two icons.

The clip begins with Trevino helping Palmer select a club for an approach shot. Palmer stands over the ball while Trevino studies the yardage and offers the kind of advice that only he could deliver.

Lee: “You’re 150 to the pin.”

Arnold: “A little eight iron downwind.”

Lee: “Maybe 155.”

Arnold: “Oh, oops.”

Lee: “No, hit the 8, hit the 8. No, you’re closer than that.”

Palmer laughs and plays along.

Arnold: “He’s going to caddie for me this week.”

Lee: “I’ll tell you one thing, if I had a caddie for you, you would’ve won the Grand Slam a long time ago.”

Palmer asks how he should play the shot and Trevino answers with the certainty of someone who had read thousands of approach shots in his career.

Arnold: “How do I hit this in there?”

Lee: “You don’t want to go left.”

Palmer wonders if he should hit it high and soft. Trevino gives him a clear plan.

Arnold: “High, soft.”

Lee: “Well, I tell you what, put it right on the pin but it has to go right out over it.”

Arnold: “All right.”

Lee: “Right on the pin because it should slide a little to the right. Up in the air.”

Palmer swings and well, the advice worked... To an extent.

Lee: “Boy, I tell you I can caddie.”

The crowd around them bursts into laughter, and moments like these remind us why his legacy isn’t just written in trophies but in laughter. He played the game with skill, but he carried it with soul, and that’s why even a short commercial still feels like a classic.

What’s the Lee Trevino moment that still makes you laugh?
