As the 4th of July weekend kicks off, President Donald Trump announced his intention to visit the Irish Open later this year.

In a video message to the US Ambassador in Ireland for America's 250th birthday, President Trump talked about his golf course in Doonbeg, County Clare. It was later shared by Ambassador Edward Walsh on X, following the Independence Day celebrations that took place in Phoenix Park, Dublin.

"We have a beautiful place over there," President Trump said.

He was talking about the Trump International Golf Links and Hotel in Doonbeg, County Clare. The course sits along the Atlantic coast on Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way in County Clare. It opened in 2002 and spans 1.5 miles of links land curling around Doughmore Bay.

"It's one of the best, most beautiful golf courses anywhere in the world. You know that. We have a place that's so top, and we have the Irish Open going to be there. And we're going to have a tremendous celebration. I think I'm going to come over, and I'm going to see it, and I'm going to watch, and we're going to watch Rory and all the great players."

This marks a special occasion as the Trump-owned course will host the Amgen Irish Open for the first time in 2026. The event will take place between September 10th and 13th, later this year.

"That'll be something very, very special. It's called Trump National. We sometimes use the name of the location, but it's Trump National Golf Club," he added.

The tournament is part of the DP World Tour and has a prize fund of $6 million. Rory McIlroy is the defending champion after winning the 2025 tournament at The K Club in a three-hole playoff against Joakim Lagergren.

However, McIlroy won't have it easy this time, as a two-time major champion is returning to the event.

Jon Rahm returns to challenge McIlroy

Following his appearance at the Genesis Scottish Open, Jon Rahm is making his second DP World Tour start in 2026.

"I’m really looking forward to getting back to Ireland for the Amgen Irish Open. Winning this tournament twice means a lot to me and it’s always a place I enjoy playing. The courses, the fans and the challenge of links golf make it a special week," he said, per Bunkered.

As per the deal Rahm signed with the DP World Tour, he must play five European events. He will be allowed to play in LIV events as well.

In any case, Rahm faces off against the likes of Tyrrell Hatton, Rasmus Højgaard, and Nicolai Højgaard, who are expected to play in the tournament.
