When Viktor Hovland's Favorite Song Had Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and More Scratching Their Heads

Viktor Hovland is one of the best golfers out there. His music taste, though, is not something everyone agrees with.
At the 2023 Ryder Cup, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Hovland's other European teammates were made to listen to his favourite song, Instill by Humanity's Last Breath. It was a hardcore heavy metal number with growling and screaming vocals.
The reaction from Hovalnd's teammates clarified that none of them belonged to the heavy metal community. "That sounds like the devil," Rory McIlroy said the moment the song kicked in. It went downhill from there.

Here's a list of what Hovland's Ryder Cup 2023 team members had to say after listening to his favorite song:
- Matt Fitzpatrick: “That’s not even music. That’s horrendous.”
- Tyrrell Hatton: “I think you’ve played that for like 15 seconds too long there.”
- Jon Rahm: "What is wrong with Viktor?"
Only Justin Rose vibed to the heavy metal song, trying to match its beats on the airdrums.
The verdict across the entire European team room was swift, brutal, and unanimous. Viktor Hovland's music taste was a serious problem.
Viktor Hovland’s Response to the Verdict About His Favorite Song
Victor Hovland was not budging. While McIlroy was planning interventions and teammates were debating whether what they heard even qualified as music, the Norwegian held his ground without flinching.
"It's just super chaotic," Hovland said. "But the more you listen to it, you find the rhythm and beats, and it kind of comes together and makes sense."
The room was not buying it. Not a single convert. Not one. Just a group of elite golfers staring at a teammate who was completely serious about a song that sounded, to everyone else, like organised chaos.
The Ryder Cup strips away the tournament formality and leaves you with moments that actually feel real. Hovland's song did not win any fans that week in Rome. His team won the Ryder Cup, though. So maybe he gets the last laugh after all.
