The forecast called for sunshine and 84 degrees for the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands on Sunday, June 28. Instead, fans got a rain delay, a slip-and-slide, and scenes that had nothing to do with golf and everything to do with what happens when a big crowd, wet grass, and a long wait collide.

Video posted to X on June 29 captured the chaos at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut. Fans lined up to slide through standing water on the course, cheering each other on as the rain came down. The clip was posted with the tournament's official account tagged and a note that the rain "brought the energy."

The clip ended with a send-off for the next day's playoff. "Good luck, Scotty, tomorrow."

The delay that sparked it all hit at 5:57 p.m. ET, when officials suspended play due to lightning. Sunday's forecast had given only a 10% chance of rain.

When play stopped, Scottie Scheffler held a one-shot lead at 21 under par with five holes remaining. Viktor Hovland was close behind. 

Collin Morikawa had already finished at 20 under with a final-round 61. The tournament announced that fans would not be allowed back on the course due to facility conditions.

Play started again at 7:20 p.m. ET and went on until the evening. When the round ended, Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland were tied at 21 under. They will now play a playoff on Monday at 9 a.m.

A weather-disrupted week at the Travelers Championship finally finds its finish

Bad weather had already stopped play earlier in the 2026 Travelers Championship. Sunday's weather delay was not the first one in the tournament.

The second round on Friday, June 26, started 30 minutes late because heavy rain made the course very wet, as posted by PGA Tour Communications on X. Players were allowed to use preferred lies. The weather was much better on Saturday, June 27 and Hovland played a great third round to move near the top of the leaderboard.

Before the skies opened, Sunday had produced some outstanding scoring. Morikawa carded a final-round 61 to finish at 20 under. Matt Fitzpatrick finished with a final-round 64 to end the tournament at 19 under. Wyndham Clark and Akshay Bhatia both finished at 18 under.

Scheffler and Hovland had pulled ahead of the rest of the field. With five holes left to play, Scheffler was at 21 under, just two shots away from the tournament record of 23 under, set by Keegan Bradley in 2023. He was also trying to win the Travelers Championship for the second time in three years.

Then the lightning came.

The $20 million Signature Event, and its FedExCup points, remained on the line heading into Monday. Both men had five holes still to play when the delay hit. When play finally concluded late Sunday evening, the pair had finished level, forcing a 9 a.m. Monday playoff.
