Wyndham Clark walked into 'The Rink' wearing a USA hockey jersey on June 13. The Canadian crowd did not forget, as they booed throughout the round on June 14, but the 32-year-old seemed to enjoy playing the villain. Clark made it his mission to shut them up on the famed hole 14.
The 2023 U.S. Open champion, Clark, played in the final group on Sunday with Jackson Suber and Bud Cauley at the RBC Canadian Open. Hole 14, the fan service hockey hole, saw Clark hit a birdie on Sunday. Following this, he put his hand up to cup his ear with a smile, taunting the already booing crowd.
Golf.com posted a video on X on June 15, with the caption, "Wyndham Clark can't stop trolling the Canadian fans."
Fans loudly booed him throughout his final round because of the jersey incident the day before. On Saturday, he pulled on a No. 86 Jack Hughes USA replica hockey sweater as he walked to the tee at the par-3 seventh hole during the third round.
He made a birdie on the par-3 14th hole for the second day in a row, but the crowd kept booing. Clark shot a final-round 70 and finished tied for 11th after a bogey on the 18th hole cost him a third straight top-10 finish.
Canadian golf icon, Mike Weir, said, "He's trying to play the full villain, and when you walk off with a birdie that's pretty good."
Clark's previous round told its own story, too, and it connects directly to a bigger picture about where his game is right now.
Wyndham Clark The Putter Switch Paying Off
The jersey got most of the attention, but Clark's 63 in Round 3 was the day's best score. The round moved him into a third-place tie at 11-under par. He was two shots behind leader Jackson Suber and one shot behind Bud Cauley.
It was the fourth time in his last 11 rounds that he shot 65 or better.
"I've said it a couple times; I've actually played pretty solid golf most of the year, I just haven't done it for consecutive rounds," Clark said.
Clark's RBC Canadian Open performance follows a win at the CJ Cup and a third-place finish at the Memorial last week. He spoke about how a change in club helped.
"And then the missing part has kind of been the putting. Since I switched to this Ping putter, it's been amazing. So now I feel like all the hard work I've put into my swing is paying off because when I hit the greens or hit it close, I'm actually making the putts, where maybe earlier in the year I wasn't."
He'd better be glad his putter is shooting birdies. The PGA Tour's official social media accounts reposted the jersey moment with the caption: "If you walk into the rink hole wearing a USA jersey, you better walk away with a birdie."
Clark did exactly that.
