Xander Schauffele's Split From His Father as Coach: The Real Reason Behind the Decision

The change in Xander Schauffele’s team surprised many, largely because his father had been central to every step of his rise. For much of his career, Xander Schauffele operated inside a tight triangle: player, father-coach Stefan Schauffele, and caddie Austin Kaiser. However, that formula hasn't always brought the best results.

Yet after each major disappointment, the trio found themselves circling back to the same exhausting conversation. Looking for the cause of another near miss. As Kaiser later summed it up, they eventually had to confront the core question. “Was it a bad decision? Or was it bad execution?” Those recurring postmortems gradually pointed toward an unavoidable conclusion.

Xander Schauffele Rebuilt the System

The recalibration came in 2024. Schauffele contacted Chris Como, a coach whose track record with Tiger Woods, Bryson DeChambeau, Jason Day, and others made him uniquely positioned to refine rather than overhaul. The objective was straightforward: add speed, tighten positions, and create a swing path that held up under pressure.

However, adopting a new coach naturally raised a sensitive question about Stefan’s role. After a winless 2023 season and a difficult Ryder Cup, outside speculation grew that father and son had split on bad terms. But internally, the choice was cooperative, not combative. Wanting the new partnership to take root without distractions, Stefan decided to step back. And XanderXander Schauffele's father didn't just step back.

Stefan even relocated to Hawaii to give Xander Schauffele and Como room “to breathe,” as he explained. That distance became symbolic. From thousands of miles away, Stefan watched his son stitch together the performance that had eluded him for years. A breakthrough PGA Championship win.

When Xander called him immediately afterward, Stefan picked up in tears. The moment underscored that the shift was never about separation. Rather, it was about evolution. Both Schauffeles have been candid about the reasoning. Xander described the coaching change as “a culmination of a lot of things.”

While acknowledging that Como could “find answers that Xander and I together couldn’t come up with.” Stefan echoed the sentiment, saying Como “was able to immediately answer what we were looking for years.” The outcome validated the decision.

Schauffele not only claimed his first major but added a second weeks later. With that win, Xander became the first player since 2014 to win two in the same season. Ultimately, the real reason behind the split was not conflict but recognition.

To move forward, Xander needed a new perspective, and his father understood it before anyone else. Their adjustment, though difficult, became the catalyst for the season that finally delivered on years of potential.
