Raw emotion showed first as Chris Gotterup became emotional on live TV after beating Hideki Matsuyama at TPC Scottsdale to secure his fourth PGA Tour win and second victory of 2026.

Post-winning the WM Phoenix Open 2026, Chris Gotterup spoke in a post-round interview with Golf on CBS's Amanda Balionis on February 9, where he opened up about the victory and showed his unfiltered emotion.

Reflecting on the final stretch, Gotterup admitted he knew the moment demanded execution but also understood how quickly things could change under pressure:

“I knew I needed to make birdie on 18, but you never know. Hideki was playing great. 17 is birdieable, but there's also some danger out there.”

Gotterup secured the win by making a birdie putt on the 18th after Matsuyama’s second shot found the water.

Speaking about how the Sony Open win helped ease mental pressure and allowed him to play more freely, Gotterup said:

“God, I don't know. I really have no idea. I'm just having such a good time playing right now. You make me cry every time. My girlfriend is here. She's like, ‘You've won three times without me here,’ and she got to see it, and I know everyone at home is watching. Just so awesome.”

Gotterup was also asked about delivering results under pressure, referencing his performance at the 2025 Genesis Scottish Open, and how he manages to respond when the situation is against him.

When asked about stepping up in the biggest moments and how playing without mental pressure is affecting him moving forward, Chris Gotterup said: 

“You know, a lot of hard work. You make me cry every time. There are just so many people that believe in me, and to be able it to share it with them, I won't be able to get through it. It's just so much fun.”

Gotterup won the 2025 Genesis Scottish Open on July 13 at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland, finishing at 15-under par to beat Rory McIlroy and Marco Penge by two shots.

He started the final round tied with McIlroy and then moved ahead with a closing 66 while the others dropped shots. 

During the event, he tied the course record with a 61 in round two and later added a birdie on the 16th hole in the final round to build his lead.

As a result, the win became his second PGA Tour title, gave him a Rolex Series win on the DP World Tour, and secured his spot in the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush, where he finished third.
