Former PGA Tour winner Wesley Bryan came within a single stroke of qualifying for The Open before a costly miss on the final hole ended his hopes.

On Tuesday, Bryan was battling at West Lancashire for the final spot out of Blundellsands, England, one of four final qualifying sites. He was sitting on the 8-under-par qualifying mark while playing the 36th hole, with five Open Championship spots available at the venue. But then the blunder happened.

“I have missed competing. Today was fun….until that last putt missed,” Bryan wrote on his X.

The moment was shared on NUCLR GOLF's X, where the player missed a 7-foot par putt on the par-4 18th. As a result, he finished one stroke short of teeing off in a playoff for the final spot.

Bryan’s rounds of 70 and 67 gave him an overall score of 7-under-par, and he ended up finishing tied for eighth place.

It looked like a comfortable putt for Bryan to make after he had made an incredible late charge into contention. However, the 36-year-old failed to convert, and he has yet to make a major appearance in eight years.

The 2018 Masters remains his last major appearance, and a year before that, he made his most recent Open Championship start.

Both Bryan brothers, Wesley and George, failed to secure a spot at Royal Birkdale.

Several other notable golfers also fell short of qualifying.

Big names who failed to qualify for the Open

The four venues hosting the 36-hole qualifiers were stacked with notable golfers. Several big names couldn't cross the line, as reported by Andrew Robson of Bunkered.

2017 Masters champion Sergio Garcia fell short at West Lancashire after battling stomach issues during the second round.

At the same site, 2016 Masters winner Danny Willett also failed to make it, finishing four shots off the pace. Five-time DP World Tour winner Matt Wallace also missed out at the same venue.

Marc Leishman, runner-up at The Open in 2015, along with Anirban Lahiri, Thomas Detry, and Dean Burmester, also failed to qualify.
