‘A-Minus Game’: Jack Nicklaus Sends Strong Message on Rory McIlroy’s Augusta Win

Apr 13, 2026, 5:44 AM CUT

Jack Nicklaus is weighing in on Rory McIlroy's historic Masters defense. The Golden Bear praised the win but offered a blunt assessment.

Jack Nicklaus, one of the legends of the game, was the first to acknowledge the achievement on Instagram, noting his thoughts on the win in detail. The Golden Bear emphasized that the winner had matured immensely.

"What a wonderful @themasters win for @rorymcilroy! Congratulations, Rory, on back-to-back Green Jackets!" wrote Nicklaus.

However, when evaluating the Irishman's success, Jack Nicklaus said, "Maybe he didn't have his A game, but Rory did what he had to do with his A-minus game."

Rory McIlroy got off to a blistering start, finishing the second round with a six-stroke lead, setting a new 36-hole record at the Masters.

He beat Herman Keiser's five-shot lead benchmark that had stood since 1946. However, multiple mistakes, including a double-bogey in the third round, erased that lead.

However, Nicklaus believes, "He did what he had to do, WHEN he had to do it! And that's how you win!"

This year's victory marks McIlroy's sixth major, with two of those coming consecutively at Augusta.

Jack Nicklaus reveals how Rory McIlroy can make history in 2027

McIlroy's successful title defense at Augusta makes him only the second golfer, after Tiger Woods, Nick Faldo, and Jack Nicklaus himself, to win two consecutive Masters.

However, the Irish golfer is now in a position where he can do what none of the other three could.

"The monkey came off your back last year, and now, all of a sudden, you are the only guy who has a chance to three-peat," wrote Jack Nicklaus.

And it's no wonder Nicklaus is so invested. The legendary golfer has publicly advised the 2026 champion since 2019. Even this year, Nicklaus bluntly told McIlroy what to avoid.

"No f****** double bogeys," said the 86 ahead of the Tournament. Now, he believes that "Rory is in the prime of his career," and is excited for what he can achieve.
