Alex and Matt Fitzpatrick triumphed at the 2026 Zurich Classic. The brothers established what they had set out to do as Alex Fitzpatrick won his two-year PGA Tour exemption. However, the duo didn't partake in a winner's tradition set by Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry.
The PGA Tour posted the Fitzpatrick brothers' post-game highlights with the caption "All-access with Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick after their win." The clip also showed that Alex and Matt Fitzpatrick refused to sing on the stage after their win.
Despite the insistence from the fans and the staff, the brothers politely declined to sing their "favortie" song. Even when one official said, "You gotta outdo Rory," Matt Fitzpatrick said no.
Back in 2024, Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry had famously sung Journey's Don't Stop Believin' and went viral. Since then, the fans also came to expect the champions to sing.
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy himself was keeping an eye on this year's tournament and even texted the Fitzpatricks after their win. "What a ******* bunker shot!" Rory McIlroy texted Matt Fitzpatrick.
Alex and Matt Fitzpatrick set a new record
While the Fitzpatricks got off to a slow start in the first round, they finished with a record-breaking score of 257 for 31-under par after the last round.
They managed to edge out the competition by just one shot after a volatile final round. They started Sunday with a four-stroke cushion after an outstanding third round of 57, but a double-bogey on the 12th hole and another bogey on the 14th brought their lead down to zero.
The battle went all the way to the par-5 18th hole, where the teams of Smalley/Springer and Reitan/Ventura were tied at 30-under after they finished playing. In order to escape a playoff, the brothers needed a birdie.
Matt hit his shot out of the bunker 35 yards onto the green, leaving only one foot for Alex, who made a tap-in to secure the win. “I couldn't feel my hands, couldn’t feel my legs, couldn’t feel anything,” Alex confessed after winning his PGA Tour card.
"I signed as quick as I could," said Alex Fitzpatrick, who worked hard to earn his two-year exemption. However, that wasn't the only good news, because he also earned a spot at the upcoming PGA Tour Championships.
