“Are You Kidding Me?” Tiger Woods' Ex-Caddie Recalls Tense Moment With Tiger Woods at Memorial

Mar 22, 2026, 3:33 AM CUT

Being Tiger Woods' caddie isn't easy. And Joe LaCava found it out the hard way when Woods asked him one question.

In an interview with CSGA, LaCava recalled a memorable incident from the 72nd hole at Muirfield Village during his first year with Woods in 2012.

The accident took place when Woods was on the fairway in the one-shot ahead of Rory Sabbatini, and he had a 178-yard shot to make and was required to create a birdie to close the win.

Instead of suggesting a club, LaCava asked Woods what shot he thought was necessary to win the tournament.

Tiger did not hide his impatience over the holdup, as LaCava noted his boss's irritation, "I wanna know what you think club I should hit, and you're asking me a question?"

The conflict reached its climax when LaCava was not confident to make a club recommendation, and so Woods looked at him, which communicated, "Are you f****** kidding me right now?"

A Calculated Risk for the Seventy-Third Win

LaCava admitted he opted to be a little untruthful with the yardage, telling Tiger it was a 9-iron because he didn't want to bring the long rough into play.

The caddie was concerned that an 8-iron could go long left into a pocket where a player could very easily make a five or six, thus potentially losing the entire lead in the tournament.

Woods made a tight draw, and his ball landed 20 feet off the pin. This was a birdie on the 72nd hole that enabled Woods to secure another win. And as Joe LaCava shared, it was the moment he knew he could make it big alongside the legendary golfer, in terms of silverware and the prize money!
