Golfing in Singapore's hot and humid climate exacts a hefty toll, and playing under such conditions needs mental and physical preparation.
As the LPGA Tour members battled it out at the HSBC Women’s World Championship, Auston Kim revealed her secret to fueling up at the Sentosa Golf Club.
“Drinking a lot of sodium, making sure that my electrolyte levels are up,” Kim told the media following her round on Friday. “And I’m eating. This year, I've started to make sure that I'm eating at least 700 to 800 calories, at least. And this week, I'm eating at least a thousand whenever I'm on course.”
Under the steamy conditions of Singapore, the golfers and their caddies need to stay hydrated and keep their electrolyte levels up. Sodium will replenish all the electrolytes that the players lose through sweat. And eating enough calories will fuel them up to sustain the long walks between holes.
Kim continued, “Making sure that I’m recovering as well as I can after the rounds. So, getting plenty of sleep and taking all my supplements. It’s a lot of work off the course as well.”
Kim’s strategy works because heat significantly increases metabolic demands. To dissipate heat, the body diverts blood to the skin to open the sweat pores. And that lowers the available energy for muscular activity. Without enough calories to fuel the body, people experience fatigue, lose cognitive focus, and faint.
But Kim’s strategy doesn’t rely solely on electrolytes and calories. She has also embraced a mindset for the win.

Kim said, "I'm trying to embrace every single moment right now, and every single moment I'm out there competing and playing golf, it's a win, and there's only things to gain.”
"I'm trying to take that to heart and enjoy competing. This is when I feel most alive."
Right now, Auston Kim is leading the leaderboard at Sentosa Golf Club with a total of 10-under 135. She has even boosted her CME rank 34 spots up to number two.
But how would you tackle the golf course in Singapore?
