After his first round at LIV Golf Virginia, Bryson DeChambeau was honest about his ongoing health concerns. In the post-game conference, he shared how his shoulder is stressing him as the second major event of the season drew near.
As the captain of the Crushers GC, DeChambeau revealed that he had been struggling with an injured shoulder that had troubled him for the past several months. It required extensive medical attention and frequent diagnostics to manage the situation.
“I've had some shoulder stuff since, shoot, the Ryder Cup,” said DeChambeau. “I don't know what happened. It's been trained. It's been treated. We've worked on it. We've done a bunch of stuff, MRIs. It's all been fine. It's been eking at me for quite a while.”
Despite already winning twice on LIV Golf this year, both Jon Rahm and DeChambeau shot 69 and ended the round five strokes off the lead.
After being asked if his first-round performance was indicative of the best he could play, the golfer shared his take.
"Not at all," he said. “That was a little uncomfortable YouTube golf out there. That's what I felt like today."
Beyond tournament golf, DeChambeau has gained popularity on YouTube for his lighthearted golf content featuring challenges, trick shots, and non-traditional rounds.
However, the situation was tough in the dense Virginia rough. DeChambeau explained that he was having trouble due to excessive physical exertion and, as such, had to adjust his mechanics so his body wouldn't wear out during the tournament weekend.
"I've been protecting a lot this arm, trying to not get it over too much. It is what it is," said DeChambeau while reflecting on the hard round.
Meanwhile, this is not the first time that DeChambeau has struggled with his shoulders.
Bryson DeChambeau Navigating a String of Physical Setbacks
Back in July 2018, a right shoulder injury forced him to withdraw from the John Deere Classic. The 2026 season has been difficult, too. DeChambeau had to withdraw from the last round of the LIV Golf Mayakoba in Mexico in April because of a recurring wrist injury.
The situation came at a critical moment for DeChambeau. He was chasing a third consecutive LIV Golf title. However, he struggled early at Club de Golf Chapultepec and withdrew while trailing Jon Rahm by 16 shots.
Even with all these challenges, he is still determined to tackle the equally difficult challenge of getting used to the extremely quick greens that come with the upcoming second major of the season.
"I was proud of the way I fought out there, not hitting it my best," the captain concluded. "I’ve got to go work on that. It’s close. It’s not that far off."
Bryson DeChambeau faces an important crossroads, as his LIV Golf contract expires after the season, leaving his future beyond 2026 uncertain. At the same time, LIV’s funding limitations could take a major long-term contract off the table.
