Cam Young Reveals the Truth Behind His Pause and Why He Can't Play Any Other Way

Mar 24, 2026, 4:00 PM CUT

Cameron Young's victory at the 2026 PLAYERS Championship put his unique swing in the spotlight. Now, the champion is explaining the truth behind his signature pause.

Young won the title with a remarkable 375-yard shot on the 18th hole at TPC Sawgrass. The notable pause at the top of his backswing freeze intrigued fans, and the 28-year-old was happy to answer.

"I don't think I could really play any other way," Young explained, making it clear that if he tried to become more methodical with his backswing, it would cause issues with the rest of his game.

This revelation came during his interview on the Fore Play podcast, where Cameron Young discussed the mechanical quirk he developed during his college years.

Although this move may seem completely motionless to fans, Young elucidated the feeling, "Some of it is fake. There's a little bit of it that is just a bit of an illusion."

He is consistently slower at the top than almost all of his peers on Tour, although he mentions his move is a little less constrained than the complete freeze employed by Hideki Matsuyama.

A Legacy of Unique Mechanics on the PGA Tour

Young's dependence on an unorthodox move invites obvious parallels to other big winners, like Jim Furyk, who famously achieved success despite having a "loop" in his swing.

Furyk once mentioned that no matter how his swing looked to others, he thought he was swinging just like Tiger Woods.

Young, like Furyk, believes "It just feels normal. It's hard to explain, but it … I don't notice it really ever."

The 2026 PLAYERS Champion has made adjustments to implement a quicker takeaway on the range to increase his speed, but he will not implement those adjustments in a competitive setting.

Cam Young is now gearing up to take this unprecedented momentum into the remaining majors of the season. Where do you think he will stand when it wraps up?
