The upcoming PGA Tour event taking place in Texas is seeing a reshuffle just a few days ahead of the scheduled kickoff set for 21st May. Eight early withdrawals have affected the tournament entries significantly.
The official field list confirms that top competitors are sitting out this week. This sudden mass departure has forced tournament organizers to reconstruct their entire tee-time lineup.
The PGA Tour Communications announced that eight tour pros withdrew within days of the CJ CUP Byron Nelson, which has an overall prize pot of $10.3 million. The withdrawals prompted officials to fill open slots on short notice.
The withdrawals began over the weekend. On Saturday, May 16, Nicolai Højgaard and Marco Penge withdrew, which brought Noah Goodwin and Cameron Champ into the field.
The exits continued into Sunday, May 17.
Michael Kim, Webb Simpson, and Trey Mullinax all withdrew, allowing Will Gordon and Luke List to secure spots in the field.
Again on Monday, May 18, three more withdrawals took place, including Aldrich Potgieter, Andrew Putnam, and Aaron Rai, where Jonathan Byrd, Austin Cook, and S.Y. Noh made their entry.
Altered Field Dynamics at TPC Craig Ranch
To round out the threesomes for the week, officials expanded the field from 145 to 147 players. Scott Piercy, Ryan Palmer, and sponsor exemption Mason Howell were added.
Four golfers secured their spots through late open qualifiers. Greg Gregory, Nathan Petronzio, Alex Huang, and Ronin Banerjee successfully played their way in.
The current situation is similar to the last-minute field change witnessed at the Cadillac Championship recently. Some of the biggest names missing were Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick, Xander Schauffele, and even Brooks Koepka.
The PGA Tour uses an alternate list where players are ranked according to their current priority rankings within the year to easily fill any unexpected gap. When a player logs a late withdrawal, the next eligible professional on standby is immediately notified to step up.
Aaron Rai withdrew to celebrate his milestone PGA Championship victory, while Marco Penge cited ongoing recovery from a viral infection as his reasons for skipping the Texas field.
Scottie Scheffler, the defending champion, continues to be the main favorite as he hopes to win the big payoff despite being challenged by an altered field.
The question, however, arises as to what influence these first-field adjustments will have on the tournament scoreboard. The impact of these field changes will be revealed when the first tee shot is hit in McKinney.
How do you think such withdrawals affect the golfers who continue playing in the tournament? Let us know in the comments.
