Eric Cole's 2026 Charles Schwab Challenge dream came crashing down in a playoff loss against Russell Henley at the Colonial Country Club. Despite the disappointment, Cole's media interaction after the tournament showed admirable calmness.
The American golfer played valiantly through the final round, equilizing Henley at -12, but a playoff is where his fortunes failed him. He fell short of his maiden PGA Tour victory after Henley birdied the playoff hole.
Reflecting on the runner-up finish, Eric Cole shared his honest feelings and admitted, "I was proud of the way I played, and it's disappointing, but I still feel good and happy with the way I played."
The competitive final round presented numerous hurdles for the golfer, including an expensive double bogey on the par-4 ninth hole that severely disrupted his mid-round momentum.
"Double bogeys aren't good, but I told myself when I got to 10 tee... this is a good spot to be," Cole explained while handling the setback.
Cole battled back to finish regulation tied at 12-under 268 after shooting a final-round 70, yet this near miss strongly echoed his past heartbreaks on the tour.
After Cole earned his PGA Tour card in late 2022 December, this was his fourth time playing at the Colonial Country Club. Unfortunately, the results haven't changed through the years.
While he missed the cut in his first two years (2023, 2024), 2025 saw him finish T28, with 2026 being his closest to victory.
Cole had to settle for a $1,079,100 runners-up paycheck of the $9.9 million purse, as Henley took the playoff win.
But this is not Cole's first playoff heartbreak.
Eric Cole Relives Sudden Death Heartbreak on the PGA Tour
The close call is reminiscent of the heartbreak that Cole experienced at the 2023 Cognizant Classic, in which he lost a high-pressure sudden-death playoff against Chris Kirk.
In what proved to be a memorable encounter at the PGA National in 2023, both golfers were tied at 14-under par for the day coming into the extra playoff hole, the 18th hole.
Kirk emerged victorious with a brilliant birdie on the playoff hole, awarding Cole second place and $915,600 for his play throughout the four days.
Similarly, during the playoff holes at Colonial, Russell Henley emerged the winner with a birdie, while Cole's similar birdie attempt at the 18th hole narrowly missed the green.
"The putt was good. I hit it pretty much where I was aiming, I just kind of misread it," the runner-up noted.
Despite the loss, his second-place finish confirms that Cole can compete under the pressure of final group contention.
Cole has officially earned a coveted spot in next week's Memorial Tournament through the Aon Swing 5 standings, offering an immediate opportunity for redemption.
