“Everything That I’ve Done…”: Rory McIlroy Reveals the One Do-Over He’d Take if Given the Chance

It took Rory McIlroy over a decade to achieve a career grand slam. Many would think that if he had a chance for a do-over, he’d choose to replay the 2022 Masters Tournament, where he finished second. But in reality, things took a different turn.

During an interview with Boston Common Golf on the Drive With The Green episode 4, the producer asked McIlroy about his number one moment he’d like to revisit for a career do-over. But the five-time major champion replied, “I wouldn’t!”

He reasoned, “I think everything that I’ve done in my career has led me to this point, and maybe if I had some do-overs, it wouldn’t have worked out the way it has.”

The response stood in contrast to how his career has often been framed, particularly during the years when closing on Sundays became his biggest challenge.

Take the 2024 U.S. Open, for example. Rory McIlroy was left behind by Bryson DeChambeau after missing putts on the 16th and 18th holes. He was 496-for-496 on putts inside three feet before those misses at Pinehurst.

McIlroy had been chasing another major championship for more than a decade, openly acknowledging how much it meant to him. By his own admission, the desire grew so large that the moment itself became overwhelming. And yet, despite those high-profile collapses, McIlroy has refused to rewrite his past.

According to Dr. Sian Beilock, one of the experts on the psychology of choking, pointed out that the issue was not mechanical ability but mental disruption.

How Rory McIlroy Moved Past Golf’s ‘Choking’ Labels?

Dr. Beilock confirmed that one simply can’t “fix” choking. He studied McIlroy’s performance at the 2011 Masters and the final victory at the 2025 Masters. And it was confirmed that victory over choking comes with a calm mind.

Reflecting back on the 2025 Open returning to Royal Portrush, Rory McIlroy said, “I just think it’s back to knowing what to expect. I didn’t feel like I was walking into the unknown this time around, where last time I hadn’t experienced that before.”

“This time, I had a better idea of what was going to be coming my way.”

McIlroy’s journey shows that pressure isn’t eliminated, only understood. By embracing experience over regret, he transformed past collapses into the foundation for lasting success.
