Nelly Korda surged to the top of The Chevron leaderboard, producing a superb seven-under-par 65, taking an early two-shot lead. Following the rain-soaked Memorial Park, Korda alluded to a fundamental reason behind her recent dominance.

During her post-round interview, the American star discussed the secret behind her success: her stable technical staff. She detailed the significant difference her longtime coach has made in her career and in her swing mechanics.

She has openly attributed the solid foundation of her skills to David Whelan. "I don't think I go out ever without my coach David Whelan now… he's the one that built my swing."

This insight came from her tough but successful first round, in which she relied on her accurate ball-striking to navigate the wet fairways. However, the player managed to keep her scorecard clean despite the difficult conditions.

David Whelan has been with her for the longest part of her professional career, since she was 14. This long-term dedication from her coaches, combined with her commitment to the sport, bore one of the most efficient on the LPGA Tour.

The star further explained his impact on her professional career, not only the pure mechanical aspects. "It's more like he relaxes me out practicing, and I enjoy going out and grinding and having him there alongside me," Nelly Korda revealed.

The support Korda has found from her team is an undeniable factor in her vast success and ensuing fame.

The Enduring Team Behind the Swing

Korda’s ability to dominate at major events relies on a consistent team. This allows her to focus completely on her game, knowing the internal stability that her team shows.

According to Korda, having the right people around her is the key reason she won many trophies. For instance, Korda said, “I feel like I have a really great team around me. I have been with the same physio for so many years, Kim; Jason since my second year on Tour. I have all my professional LPGA wins with him.”

Another factor contributing to her success is the help from her putting coach, David Angelotti, who accompanied her for this week’s play. The influence of his advice was visible when Korda managed to make several important pars to keep going during her first day.

Korda added, “So I think just there is a comfort and happiness inside me that makes me happy on the golf course, too.”

Moving forward at The Chevron, Korda believes her competent swing and her team's confidence are her key strengths.
