The seasoned American professional golfer Tony Finau faces a new challenge in his career this season. Finau recently faced a rare setback in qualifying for the upcoming U.S. Open tournament.

Finau missed qualifying by a whisker on Monday during the tough final qualifier at Springfield Country Club. Finau shot an opening round 70 before rebounding with a solid 5-under-par 65. Senior golf writer Bob Harig reported that he spoke to Finau about missing another major this season, and posted his report on X late on June 8.

"Feels good about his game but will miss three majors this year after playing 33 in a row, "I can't go 0 for 4," Finau stated.

Finau was referencing the fact that he hasn't participated in a single major this year, and missing the U.S. Open would make it three out of four. He has already missed both the Masters and the PGA Championship.

His cumulative score of 135 was unfortunately not enough to punch his ticket. The miss halts one of the most impressively durable active streaks in modern golf. Finau has played 33 consecutive majors, beginning at the 2017 British Open. He tied for 27th place.

Missing three major tournaments within a single year is an unprecedented experience for the 36-year-old golfer.

However, despite this setback, Finau is not giving up on his season yet. He is already setting his sights on a different direction in search of quick redemption.

Tony Finau's Inconsistent 2026 Season Sets Stage for Canada Push

The unexpected blow in the qualifying process comes at a turbulent period for this six-time tour winner. Finau has had many problems keeping a consistent rhythm throughout the season.

The beginning of his 2026 campaign included failed attempts at making the cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii and The American Express. He then experienced another early exit at the popular WM Phoenix Open.

Even during prestigious signature events, his consistency wavered. Finau slumped to a disappointing tie for 70th place at THE PLAYERS Championship after posting high weekend rounds of 75 and 77.

Nevertheless, there have also been a few bright spots in terms of his recent results. Notably, he managed a top-10 showing at THE CJ Cup Byron Nelson, finishing at 20-under par and tying for sixth.

That positive momentum was quickly broken by a failed attempt to make the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge. Afterward, he managed a modest 29th-place result at the Memorial Tournament.

These unpredictable results only strengthen his conviction in the need to find a solution quickly. He is now on a trip across the border to salvage his remaining major schedule.

"Heading to Canada now," Finau warned his competitors ahead of the next event. "Play to win."
