Scottie Scheffler has a knack for deadpan humor even in the face of serious questions. That quality was on full display at the Genesis Invitational Press conference.
Scheffler took part in a pre-tournament press conference on February 18, 2026, and had a very light-hearted conversation regarding the recent "emotions" he has shown on the course.
The exchange started when a reporter asked Scheffler about an incident from the prior week in Phoenix, implying that the player's frustration was so extreme that he "threw the ball into the crowd."
With a laugh, Scottie Scheffler was first to respond to the assumption, saying, "I did not throw the ball into the crowd." After the reporter said it was the "trees," instead, Scheffler joked, "The trees were okay."

This moment also showed a more human side of the normally stone-faced champion. Scheffler said the sport's natural irritation is what prompts the reporter to ask, "You have played golf before, though, right? Yeah, it is frustrating."

He said some of his recent "residual frustration" was from how hard the putting surfaces were in Phoenix. Because of this, he decided to change putters this week, switching from a blade to a Spider mallet putter to help clear his mind.
Scheffler uses his deadpan delivery and humor a lot when responding to what he classifies as 'heavy' or 'serious' questions. During a presser in 2024, he jokingly mentioned that he and Tiger only talk about how 'the purses need to be bigger' and how it is 'BS' that they do not get paid to play in the Ryder Cup.
Similar to the Tiger moment, Scheffler used this conference to navigate the gap between elite performance and the average golfer's frustrations. He says that when you have high expectations of yourself, it is perfectly normal to experience frustration.
In the lead-up to the Riviera event, Scheffler is working to stay in control of his emotions and deliver the desired outcome on each shot.
