The 16th hole at the 2026 Memorial Championship shook even the ever-composed Scottie Scheffler. The current world no. 1 was seen losing his temper in a clip that has been making the rounds on social media.
The moment occurred during the first round of the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village. But on Hole 16, Scheffler shot a ball near the pin, but it ended up in the water next to the greens. Scheffler turned to his longtime caddie, Ted Scott, and was heard exclaiming per a June 5 clip on X by NUCLR Golf.
"I don't know what to do."
This occurred when Scheffler hit the 206-yard, par-3 16th hole. His tee shot ended up in a water hazard because of an unexpected gust of wind.
The American golfer continued his animated monologue, stating, "I absolutely flushed a 7-iron, and we get the wind wrong, and I'm in the water."
The frustration seems valid, granted that he has won the tournament twice in a row the last two years. 2024 and 2025 saw Scheffler win $4 million each time. He was obviously expected to have a great showing, but he currently sits at T33 after Round 1.
This particular mistake bumped his score to 3-over par on the back nine, something not common for someone who nailed his season-opener at the American Express with a win in January.
He's still looking for another win this season after that one.
Breaking Down a Frustrating Opening Round Scorecard
The scorecard tells the tale of a tough day for the world's top-ranked golfer, who entered the week seeking a third consecutive victory at Jack's Place. He started his opening round well before things took a turn.
Scheffler opened with four straight pars, then picked up his first birdie on the par-5 5th hole. He followed that up with another birdie on the par-5 7th hole.
After making the turn at 2-under par, the back nine introduced a roller coaster of mistakes. He immediately carded a bogey on the 10th hole to lose a stroke.
Following a string of pars, a costly bogey arrived at the 14th hole. This completely erased his remaining under-par advantage and brought his tournament status back down to even par.
Frustration hit its peak when Scheffler got to the par-3 16th hole. With tricky winds blowing, his ball ended up in the water, leading to a double-bogey five and putting him 2-over par.
But Scheffler showed some fight. He nailed a chip-in birdie on the 17th from the rough, then wrapped up the round with a par on the 18th hole, finishing with a 1-over 73. That put him in a tie for 33rd place.
Six strokes off the lead and tied for 33rd, all eyes will be on Scheffler during the second round on Friday. Fans eagerly await his title defense.
