Zach Johnson is celebrating his 50th birthday with a chance to make golf history. The two-time major champion is making his PGA Tour Champions debut and is already in contention for a landmark victory.

Johnson will participate in what will be his first of many golf competitions with some of the sport's greatest legends at the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational.

"I am going to lean on the fact that what has gotten me to this point is still there." These were his first senior tour comments at the event interview.

As he begins this new chapter, the two-time major champion is eager to translate his decades of elite experience to quick success at The Old Course at Broken Sound Club.

"I mean my game has been pretty solid for the last, so many odd months. I don't make a ton of mistakes, or haven't made a ton of mistakes as of late," he added confidently.

Johnson will look to be the 22nd player in history to win a tournament in his first try, instantly ranking him among the senior tour's best.

Emulating the Historic Debuts of PGA Tour Champions Legends

Similar to the prominent beginnings of legends like Jim Furyk and Phil Mickelson, the galleries are filled with anticipation and considerable praise for Johnson's entry into the PGA Tour Champions. 

His philosophy of "lean on what got me here" implies that he is unlikely to make significant alterations to his swing and will instead rely on the gritty approach that won him 12 PGA Tour events. 

That being said, Johnson is well aware of the challenges he'll face. "Controlling my trajectory out here with this wind is paramount," said the golf veteran.

Going into the final round, Johnson is in the lead with one stroke at 8-under par after a Saturday round of bogey-free 66, giving him the front position for a potential landmark victory.
