Inside the Bold Move That Took Tom Kim’s Caddie to Ludvig Åberg

Success on the PGA Tour does not depend on talent alone. Many players rely on their caddies for advice and support during a round. For Ludvig Åberg, that role has been taken by veteran caddie Joe Skovron.

Skovron has worked with several well-known golfers. He first worked with Brendan Steele. After that, he caddied for Rickie Fowler. In 2022, he started working with Tom Kim. In 2023, he moved on and joined Åberg.

“It’s tough because you have two special players there that were young,” Skovron said. “I just felt like it was going to be a better situation for me going forward. I’ve maintained a great relationship with Tom and he’s been amazing about it.”

Leaving Tom Kim to work with rookie Ludvig Åberg was not a small decision. At the time, Kim was already an established winner on the PGA Tour, but Åberg was new and had not yet proven himself at that level. Even so, the veteran caddie believed the young Swede had strong potential and chose to make the move.

Moves like this also reflect how competitive the caddie market has become. Top players are willing to pay significant sums for experienced support on the bag, and agents or management teams are often involved in finding the right fit. That was also the case when Åberg’s camp contacted Skovron.

The partnership worked well from the beginning. Skovron’s experience helped Åberg adjust to life on the tour.

During difficult moments in a round, Skovron often talks things through with Åberg before a shot. This helps the young player stay committed to his decision.

Åberg once said, “Joe has kind of helped me to view golf a little bit differently, to take sort of the misses more into account because obviously you always try to hit the perfect golf shot, but if you don’t, then you try to make sure where those misses are.”

He also appreciated Skovron's calm presence in difficult situations. “The comfort that he gives me sort of when everything around you is storming, it’s always nice to lean on Joe.”

He added that working with a different high-level caddie might have made his adjustment on the course more difficult.
