“It Was So Hard”: Lauren Coughlin Highlights Strategic Shift Golfers Must Make Between Match and Stroke Play

Apr 3, 2026, 2:00 PM CUT

Lauren Coughlin didn’t ease into the Aramco Championship. She took control early on one of the toughest setups in golf.

She successfully executed the first round with precision, which explains why she is a force to be reckoned with on the challenging course at Shadow Creek Golf Course.

She said, “I played two years stroke play, and it was blowing 30, and it was so hard.”

Coughlin managed to tie for the top position at 5-under par, currently sitting at the top of the leaderboard alongside Miyu Yamashita and Nasa Hataoka.

The American golfer’s approach reflected the mental shift required as she transitioned from her recent match-play successes to the demands of stroke play.

She shared this perspective during a post-round interview, where she also discussed the effect of the course’s fast greens on her approach.

Coughlin explained that the freedom in match play comes from the fact that a golfer only loses a single hole after a mistake. In stroke play, however, “you got to be a lot more… you have to pick and choose when you can attack and when to take it easy.”

Mastering the Margins at Shadow Creek

This strategy helped her recover from a mistake on the par-5 fourth hole, where she put her ball in the water but still managed a par.

She credited her consistency to hitting her numbers throughout the day, which is crucial on a course that rewards accuracy with birdie opportunities.

Coughlin’s comfort at Shadow Creek stems from her second-place finish last year, which taught her which areas of the course to avoid. Her strategy has also been aided by a physical adjustment she made in January, when she set her iron club faces two degrees flatter to increase the height of her shots.

She missed events in Thailand and Singapore due to injury but now feels mentally and physically refreshed and ready to compete against a strong field.

Coughlin now faces the task of holding onto her narrow lead, as the volatile winds at Shadow Creek could disrupt even the best-laid plans in the crucial round ahead.
