Gary Player has always been outspoken about the current state of golf, and his latest observation is particularly interesting. The legendary golfer, nicknamed the "Black Knight," recently offered an honest assessment of the sport’s evolution.
During a recent episode of the Vanity Index podcast, the nine-time major winner had an insightful discussion with the hosts, Chad Mumm and Wells Adams. He emphasized that new technologies have completely changed the nature of the game.
"I mean it's—it's a joke how much easier golf is now. It is absolutely a joke," Player stated. This unfiltered reaction was sparked by his experience while preparing his equipment for a trip to Augusta.
While getting his driver ready, Player saw a PXG specialist arrive with various shafts and clubheads. The availability of such technical assistance amazed him, as modern customization has become incredibly convenient.
"PXG fly a guy in with all shafts and heads, and they got a screwdriver there they can make it fade, hook, high, low," Player added. Such precision was not possible during his peak years.
When Player won his first PGA Tour in 1958, golfers used wooden clubs and relied on their own adjustments. According to Player, modern equipment now does much of the work, making the game less physically demanding.
When Course Conditions Made Golf Far More Demanding
Player went on to discuss the physical difficulties of earlier times, saying that today’s professionals play on meticulously manicured courses.
“We never putted on these greens in our life. We had these big spike marks in our line,” the golfer said. In his view, today’s greens are almost immaculate compared to those of earlier eras. He pointed out that bunkers today are mechanically raked all over the world.
Because of these radical shifts in equipment and course maintenance, Player insists that comparing players across different generations is futile. In his view, the tools of the trade have evolved so dramatically that the game is almost different altogether.
“You can only divvy the best at that era that you were in, you cannot compare eras,” he stated. His comments serve as a reminder of the grit required before the modern era.
