Jon Rahm Gives His Honest Take on Sergio Garcia's Meltdown at the Masters

Jon Rahm offered a candid view of Sergio Garcia's Masters performance. The fellow Spaniards played the final round together, where Garcia's game took a nosedive, prompting Rahm to step in.
After shooting 78 in the first round, Rahm managed to make the cut by posting a 70 in the second round, finishing at 4-over par and ranked 47th heading into the weekend. He ultimately finished tied for 38th.
When asked about his countryman's meltdown, Rahm said Garcia was clearly off his game as the tournament ended.
"Obviously, he hasn't been swinging it the way he would like. Wasn't the easiest day for him so I kind of -- not much I can say," Rahm said.
The course caused problems all day. Rahm pointed out the strange discoloration and how firm the fairways and greens were, which made it very hard to recover from mistakes.
Rahm’s Empathy Amidst Augusta’s Brutal Test
Most of the afternoon, Rahm stayed focused on keeping Garcia in a better headspace while both of them kept struggling on the fast surface.
They’ve also spent years together as teammates in the Ryder Cup for Team Europe, so Rahm wasn’t looking at this from a distance. He’s seen Garcia up close for a long time, and that showed.
"To talk to him when I could and lift his spirits up a little bit," confessed Rahm, as the frustration on Garcia’s side kept building.
Garcia’s struggles followed through into the final round, where he posted a 75 to finish the tournament at 8-over par and in 52nd place, capping a week in which firm conditions punished almost every mistake.
"But felt like I was exactly where he was at today, the last few days, so I can't really say much," Rahm said, putting himself in the same spot mentally.
Going forward, the focus shifts to preparation, as dealing with surfaces like these is something he’ll need to handle better if similar conditions show up again.
