The spectacular final round from Aaron Rai earned him the Wanamaker Trophy at Aronimink. In addition to this, Spanish professional golfer Jon Rahm showed remarkable maturity following a heartbreaking loss at the tournament.
Rahm delivered an impressive performance over the weekend with rounds of 67 and 68. The former Masters champion accepted his tied second-place finish (along with Alex Smalley) gracefully, and spoke to his performance in the post-tournament presser on a YouTube video posted by the PGA Championship.
"As far as I'm concerned, to be in the mix again and hit it as good as I did and perform as well as I did this weekend, it's been a great week. Four rounds and a par, even par, can't really ask too much more of myself."
Rahm performed very well under the difficult conditions at Aronimink, with 13 birdies and even an eagle in Round 1. He recorded a driver accuracy of 51.8% off the tee box. While his own performance did not win him the trophy, Rahm was very appreciative of champion Aaron Rai.
The Legion XIII captain spoke very highly of the newly crowned major winner. Rahm praised Rai's final-round surge.
"What he did today is nothing short of special."
Rai’s clinical consistency helped him end up at 9-under par. Meanwhile, Rahm ended three shots behind at 6-under par.
Though Rahm fell short by a mere whisker of claiming the title, this result has definitely provided him with a good base for his upcoming tournaments.
Jon Rahm Gets Momentum Boost for Season Ahead
The individual climb up to T2 serves as a momentum boost for Rahm’s upcoming season. It certainly outdoes his recent major performance, finishing tied at 38th in the Masters event.
His performance over the weekend also marks another one of Rahm's top-10 finishes in the PGA Championship. He has finally outperformed his previous season finish when he tied for eighth.
The Spaniard's confidence remains high.
"Just happy that all those things I felt like I could have done better at Augusta ended up working out this week."
Rahm continues to analyze his performance thoroughly in preparation for future competitions.
"I still need to assess the entire week to be able to pick and choose what I need to change."
With his game trending upward, Rahm moves into the next phase of the season as a top contender for the remaining majors.
