Jon Rahm Reacts to DP World Tour’s Reported Fine Plans for LIV Golfers

Feb 3, 2026, 3:43 AM CUT

The DP World Tour is seeking to ease tensions by allowing LIV Golf participants to avoid fines from the 2026 season if releases are granted. And as a Ryder Cup player, what does Jon Rahm think about the DP World Tour’s move?

During a press conference at the Riyadh Golf Club, the Legion XIII captain admitted he didn’t know about the decision completely. Mostly, it’d be the managers handling the situation. But some golfers might make different deals.

Rahm said, “I don't know what it may be or what it's going to look like, but I'm happy to see that looking for a path forward for LIV players to be able to play on both tours and not to get penalized.”

Then came a strong stance in favor of Tom McKibbin and David Puig. Rahm believed that as European Tour winners, they “shouldn't be penalized because of the politics of the game.”

“The fact that they're looking at a positive way to figure it out, I think it's only good for us, and I think it's good for the DP World Tour, as well.”

As the conversation with the media continued, McKibbin and Tyrrell Hatton had similar thoughts to those of Jon Rahm. But not too long ago, Rory McIlroy believed that Rahm and Hatton should settle their fines and prove their commitment to the Ryder Cup.

Rory McIlroy’s Belief Contradicts Jon Rahm’s Take on the Fines

At the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, the world number two supported the fines and stated, "We went really hard on the Americans about being paid to play the Ryder Cup and we also said that we would pay to play in Ryder Cups. There are two guys that can prove it."

He continued, "What the DP World Tour is doing is upholding its rules and regulations. We, as members, sign a document at the start of every year, which has you agree to these rules and regulations.”

Rahm, Hatton, and the others knew the regulations, yet moved to LIV Golf. And McIlroy doesn’t see anything wrong in penalizing the golfers for disregarding the regulations at the DP World Tour.

The fines incurred through the end of 2025 will have to be paid. But now, the DP World Tour is moving towards stopping new fines in 2026 for the returning players, under specific conditions. We’d still have to wait for the official announcements from the tour.
