Jordan Spieth’s putter experiment did not last long.

After drawing some attention with a L.A.B. Golf VZN.1i at the Travelers Championship, he said the test was over and that he would go back to what felt most comfortable when he reached the John Deere Classic.

"I've used a different putter the last two seasons than I used for the rest of my career," Spieth told the PGA Tour reporters at the TPC Deere Run. "And I did switch to a mallet back in 2017 for a couple of weeks, but it's unusual for me to change.

"Last week I feel like I've been hitting my lines a lot, and especially the last month I just haven't seen them go in. I've actually been hitting my lines well, and I was just, like, well, maybe if I just grab one off the shelf and it goes in on a practice green," he added.

Spieth spent a month convinced his stroke was fine and his results weren't. And by the time he got to Cromwell, Connecticut, he had talked himself into finding out what else was out there.

On the practice green and later in competitive rounds, he cycled through several center-balanced options from L.A.B. Golf and Scotty Cameron.

He used a Scotty Cameron 009 putter in his amateur days and won his three major championships with that. At the 2025 WM Phoenix Open, he shifted to a T.P. Mills Trad II blade. The Mills blade has been in his bag ever since -- until the L.A.B. mallet briefly entered the conversation last week.

But now he is once again going back to his T.P. Mills Trad II blade that worked in the final round at the Travelers.

"My plan this week is just to stay with where I'm at," Spieth told the media. "I made some putts on Sunday, and I plan on taking that momentum into this week."

Speith is currently ranked 63rd in Strokes Gained: Putting.

Why Spieth is at the John Deere Classic is another bigger story

For only the second time in the 11 years since he last won the John Deere Classic, Spieth is teeing it up at TPC Deere Run.

Plus, he's skipping the Scottish Open, a tournament that's on his schedule for almost every year ahead of the British Open.

So after this week's event, he is flying straight to Royal Birkdale over the weekend before the tournament. He wants extra time to see the changes in the course. The fifth hole has been reshaped. The long par-5 15th hole has been moved to become the 14th hole. A new par-3 15th hole has been added. 

He has also missed the cut at the Scottish Open in each of his last two appearances. 

"I wanted to add an event," Spieth said after the Travelers Championship, per GolfChannel. “I thought unless I went to Birkdale before the Scottish, I’m not going to get in until Sunday night. The majors this year, I’ve liked the ones I’ve been to early and played prior to the week, just because the practice rounds are brutal. So the plan was to do that early.”

The FedExCup race is also another part of the same decision.

"I'm around 50th in the FedExCup, and that's a big deal," Spieth said. "Now I'll do the Deere, potentially Minnesota (the week after The Open) and potentially Greensboro (the final regular-season event)," he added.

A 56th finish at the U.S. Open and another bad week at Travelers dropped him down to 52nd. He finished 54th at the end of last season.
