During the 2023 and 2024 seasons, Justin Thomas ranked outside of the top 70. That relegated him from the exemption list for the Signature events, but Thomas wasn't ready to back down.
At the 2026 Valspar Championship pre-tournament press conference, Thomas expressed what he felt about his journey to regain his spot among the elites.
“It was extremely stressful. But also, I'm extremely proud of the fact that it was a big deal for me that I didn't have to rely on one exemption that year. I played my way into all of them,” Justin Thomas told the media.
Sponsor exemptions are often debated because they bypass the traditional merit-based qualification system.

"First off, I hated having to ask, but I did ask. It's like I'm not shameful or like above that. I mean, I want to be playing in these tournaments," said Thomas.
"The majority of tournaments, they were graceful, and saying that, yes, if you need it, we'll have one. But I didn't get exemptions into some," he added.
In the 2024 season, Thomas missed the cut only at the Genesis Invitational. But he landed in the top 15 in four Signature events (AT&T Pebble Beach, Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, and Travelers Championship).
Then in 2025, he returned to the winners' circle, finishing 57th despite getting back surgery (microdiscectomy) in November. While he may be divided on exemptions, Thomas also understands the need for the system.
Justin Thomas Cited Tiger Woods as an Example
"How are you going to tell the company that's putting up 15, 20 million dollars that they can't have someone in the tournament because they feel like it's better for the ratings?" argued Thomas.
He explained that just having a cut line is crucial for competitive golf, sometimes exemptions are necessary. Justin Thomas argued that giving exemptions to someone like Tiger Woods is actually the smarter move.
“He [Woods] needs to play in whatever he wants to play in, and that's better for the golf tournament and the game of golf,” Thomas claimed. “So it's a tough one to perfect, but we're working on it.”
Nevertheless, Justin Thomas has qualified to enter all signature events and the major tournaments this season. What's your take? Let us know in the comments.
