Justin Thomas’s Honest Reaction to Scottie Scheffler’s Struggling Finish at TPC Sawgrass

Mar 14, 2026, 10:00 AM CUT

The top golfers seemed to struggle a lot with the troubling weather at TPC Sawgrass in the first couple of rounds at THE PLAYERS Championship. Even Scottie Scheffler tied for the 51st position and barely made the cut for the tournament.

Meanwhile, Justin Thomas dominated the field with a four-under 68 to rank at T4 after the second round. But what does Thomas think of Scheffler after the world number one came down to the last on the cut line?

“I've played this tournament on the cut line the last couple holes, and it's not fun,” Thomas told the media at TPC Sawgrass.

“It's unlike any other place we play because it's over or not in one swing. If you're on the cut line and you're standing on 17, if you hit it in the water, you're all but done. Then the same kind of goes for 18 on the tee shot. It's every bit as hard as trying to win a golf tournament,” Thomas said about the difficulty at Sawgrass.

Yet, the world number one impressed Thomas. "No, you can just tell. It's just timing and trying to match it up. He's still hitting shots that not many people on planet earth can hit in the same rounds. It's just golf," added Justin Thomas.

Even though he began the 2026 season with a win at the American Express, Scottie Scheffler struggled in the early rounds of the later tournaments. He secured a top 15 finish in the first four events.

At the Arnold Palmer Invitational, he ended up at T24. Things didn't get any easier at THE PLAYERS Championship.

Scottie Scheffler Breaks Down His Performance at TPC Sawgrass

“It’s easier hitting it from the fairway than it is from the rough,” Scheffler said. “I played from the rough a lot today. I hit some good iron shots, which was really nice. And I did a pretty good job of managing my way around the course. Just got to be a little sharper.”

The 29-year-old was testing the Taylormade Qi4D driver. "I've seen some improvements in the new driver; like my spin is much more consistent. It's actually a touch faster than my driver," he said.

However, he didn't find exactly what he was looking for, and Scheffler ended up switching back to his old one.

"I don't think I had enough trust in what the driver head was doing compared to where I was last week," added Scheffler.

So do you agree with Justin Thomas take on the course? And do you see Scheffler regaining his top-10 position in the coming rounds? Tell us in the comments.
