LIV Golf's Graeme McDowell Is Eyeing DP World Tour Return: "Previous Fines All Paid Off"

Graeme McDowell has cleared a major hurdle in his bid to return to the DP World Tour. The former U.S. Open champion confirmed he has paid all outstanding fines, opening the door for a potential comeback to his home tour after his move to LIV Golf.

The 46-year-old golfer has been actively participating in the LIV Golf League over the past few seasons, leading to severe sanctions and fines from the European Tour.

During an interview with BBC Sport NI, Graeme revealed that he has cleared the way for his comeback by paying off his long-standing dues. "I have my previous fines all paid off, but I'm sort of at a kind of zero level with the DP World Tour," the golfer said as per the April 1 report.

This is a big milestone in the career of the Northern Irish golfer, who won the coveted Ryder Cup trophy in 2010. This clears the way for him to participate in the Irish Open, as he has not played in the tournament since switching to LIV Golf. He is reportedly seeking membership through the CEO's discretion, come May.

He mentioned missing the Irish Open and other prestigious tournaments, like the Dunhill Links Championship. Graeme is now reportedly seeking a balance between LIV Golf and the DP World Tour.

Global Pattern of Professional Reconciliation

The pattern is consistent with the wider trend among other high-profile LIV golfers, like Tyrrell Hatton, who have recently made peace to compete on both circuits. For these golfers to make a successful comeback, they need to settle their fines and commit to compete in at least 6 DP World Tour events.

Players like McDowell are finding that reconciliation is necessary to compete in the Ryder Cup, which is set to take place at Adare Manor in Ireland next year.

Although McDowell has paid off his fines, he is still not meeting some of the membership requirements regarding continuous play over the last three years.

For McDowell, what is to come is a formal, May tour-related conversation about his future schedule. Nevertheless, the golfer is ready to take any necessary steps to support Team Europe, even if this means taking on a supporting rather than a playing role.

Fans might soon see the Portrush native return to familiar fairways as he seeks competitive closure on his home tour.
