Jim Nantz, the iconic voice of the Masters, made a surprising admission. He hasn't seen Bryson DeChambeau hit a single live golf shot this year.
His statement highlighted a growing challenge for traditional broadcasters in the new era of Golf, forcing them to rely on unconventional scouting methods.
While participating in a recent media call, Nantz was asked about Bryson DeChambeau's form ahead of the first major of the year.
"I have to confess, I have not seen Bryson hit a single shot this year....All I can go off of his YouTube videos I've watched with my son," he admitted.
This comment illustrates a change in scouting. With DeChambeau moving to LIV Golf, traditional network announcers like Nantz don't have access to his competitive rounds.
This reliance on digital content over live broadcasts marks a significant shift in how veteran announcers scout top players.
Adapting to New Media and Unconventional Scouting
Today reporters must use all available information, including social media, to build their story. For example, analysts had to refer to other videos to assess players on the DP World Tour.
And it's not just Jim Nantz who ihas noticed the shift. YouTube golf has become so big that even the PGA Tour and LIV Golf capitalized on it last year.
The PGA Tour expanded it's Creator Classic into a three-event series in 2025. Content creators played on the same course PGA Tour pros used.
LIV Golf made thier move with The Duels. It was a five event series where creators played with LIV Golf pros, and the collaboations keep on coming.
So the golfing world is waiting to see whether Nantz can articulate DeChambeau's quest for a Green Jacket with his trademark accuracy, and whether the YouTube videos helped him prepare for it.
