Max Homa is making changes to his entourage in an attempt to revive his season. The PGA player with six tour victories is looking for a fix to turn the season around, and a change in personnel seems in order.
The American star has officially ended his partnership with veteran looper Lance Bennett. Looking for a fresh perspective, Homa is making an urgent change to regain his form.
According to a report by Golfweek, the split came right after Homa missed the weekend cut at the Aronimink Golf Club. He is beginning a new caddie partnership this week.
Bennett has been a caddie since 2003 and has caddied on both the PGA and the LPGA tour. The veteran caddie has carried clubs for some of the biggest names in golf, including the legendary Tiger Woods.
But Homa thought differently.
The split follows a disappointing performance at the PGA Championship. The golfer slumped to an unfortunate 12-over par total after posting consecutive rounds of 75 and 77.
Determined to revive his fortunes, Homa is now turning to his good friend Peter Pappageorge. Pappageorge officially registered on Wednesday to take over the bag for this week’s action in Texas.
The new duo faces their first trial at Colonial Country Club. Pappageorge will make his debut looping for the star at the highly anticipated Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth.
The sudden change in bagman ends a professional relationship that began last summer. Bennett originally joined forces with Homa at the RBC Canadian Open after the golfer split with Bill Harke.
Homa Strives to Replicate Past Success Amid Slump
Before hiring Bennett, Homa spent more than ten years building up his career in partnership with his childhood friend, Joe Greiner. This partnership resulted in all six of Homa's PGA Tour wins and also his career-best world ranking of No. 5.
Now, Greiner is thriving as one of the elite loopers in the Tour, even winning the RBC Heritage while briefly filling in for Justin Thomas. He now loops full-time for Akshay Bhatia.
Meanwhile, Homa's current form has plummeted over the last few months. Aside from a bright spot, finishing tied for ninth at the Masters, consistency has been absent.
Homa's recent tournament statistics reflect the severity of his slump. He has suffered costly missed cuts at both the Valspar Championship and the Valero Texas Open.
He also finished down the leaderboard at the Truist Championship, settling for a disappointing T52. These persistent struggles have caused his position in the global rankings to drop.
The former world No. 5 now sits at a lowly 123rd in the Official World Golf Ranking. He also finds himself on the outside looking in at 74th in the FedEx Cup standings.
