Seventeen-year-old prodigy Miles Russell has earned his way into the 2026 U.S. Open to be held at Shinnecock Hills via a rigorous 38-hole Final Qualifying test played on Monday.
Russell found himself competing against stiff competition in a sectional format. He also had Tiger Woods' son, Charlie Woods, acting as his caddie.
"It kept it so light," Miles Russell stated happily after finishing his round. "It's the first time I've had a buddy on the bag. I really like it, not talking much golf, just having a good time," he added.
The world's top-ranked junior golfer carded a 6-under total across 36 holes at the BallenIsles Country Club East Course. However, he needed extra playoff holes to officially book his highly anticipated Golf Major debut.
Miles Russell started steadily, playing a 1-under 71 in the first round, recovering and shooting his way back up 11 spots on the leaderboard after navigating an early triple bogey on the card.
Then, he delivered an impressive performance in the second round, playing a phenomenal 5-under 67. It included 7 birdies to gain timely promotion into the crucial qualifying position.
The late charge forced a dramatic three-for-two playoff for the final spots.
Miles Russell overcame PGA Tour Veterans and Junior Records
Russell demonstrated impressive composure when he bounced back right away from a tough bogey that occurred at the very first extra hole.
At the second extra playoff hole, the par-5 17th, Miles Russell was able to chip in to score a birdie that would guarantee him the fourth and final spot from the Florida sectional field.
Having a close friend and future teammate on the Florida State University golf team in his bag served as an added advantage for easing Russell's nerves on "Golf’s Longest Day."
With a qualification into the tournament, Miles Russell has beaten the likes of many PGA Tour professionals participating in the event, including a multi-tour winner and veteran Matt Kuchar.
The players advancing along with him were the co-medalist and elite amateur player, Giuseppe Puebla, Canada's professional, Ben Silverman, and the amateur star Ryder Cowan.
The stellar achievement adds another chapter to Russell's rapid rise. He previously broke Tiger Woods' long-standing record as the youngest recipient of the AJGA Rolex Junior Player of the Year honor at 15.
The 126th U.S. Open is scheduled for June 18-21, where the iconic duo will hope to keep making noise on golf's grandest stage.
