Min Woo Lee Helped Sway First-Time PGA Tour Winner's Puppy Plan; Here's How

After winning the 2026 Cognizant Classic, Nico Echavarria has a lot to be happy about.
However, he is especially pleased about a new furry family member, a celebration suggestion made by a fellow pro.
The Colombian player took on the notoriously difficult "Bear Trap" at PGA National and won his third PGA Tour title, a significant financial boost for his family.
Echavarria explained the playful family contract regarding the pet, saying, "The promises, yeah, we are getting a dog because a dog is expensive, so we need a third win for a dog."
This championship was the last cue for the big purchase, and it coincided with other big-life milestones for the 31-year-old. The champion remarked that the victory was a feel-good win like a "high" during a long low in the profession, making the reward a motivation.
It was quite a dominating victory for Echavarria, as he finished 17-under par. He had 2 fewer strokes than the runner-ups, Taylor Moore, Austin Smotherman, and Shane Lowry.
Min Woo Lee's Influence on the Echavarria Household
The selection of the dog breed was based on Australian golfer Min Woo Lee's preferences.
When asked if he had a say in the type of dog, Echavarria said, "Yeah, we want a Bernedoodle. Min Woo just got one, and one just like that."
Apart from the puppy, the win also marked a new chapter in the couple's emotional journey, who married just three months ago.
Nico's wife, Claudia De Antonio, has been overseeing the construction of their new house and their pool, which they closed on just last Friday.
Echavarria was most inspired by a gutsy prediction he made on Monday, as he said, "Hey, I think I can win this week" to his wife.
He can now also look forward to the Masters and return to Augusta National, as he has also crossed out his promise of a Lee-inspired Bernedoodle.
