Min Woo Lee Makes a Key Equipment Switch After Watching Chris Gotterup

Min Woo Lee has a new weapon in his golf bag. After playing with Chris Gotterup, Lee made a key equipment switch that paid off immediately at the Genesis Invitational.

Lee impressed the world by sending the ball 282 yards on the par-4 10th hole in round two. He then proceeded to two-putt the remaining 56 ft for a birdie.

Talking to the media after scoring an eight-under 65 in the second round, Lee revealed, “Just actually just played with Chris Gotterup at Waste Management and we've got similar speeds and I was using a shaft that — I haven't really changed for a long time now, and I feel like I've gotten stronger and faster and just moving the club a little bit different.”

The one-time PGA Tour winner used a Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke triple Diamond 10.5° driver head and a Fujikura Ventus Black 7-X (Velocore+) shaft. And to make his grip stronger, Lee put on a black Golf Pride MCC. The setup mirrors Chris Gotterup’s low-spin, heavy-shaft driver setup.

“So thought he hits it pretty good. He did hit it very good on that Sunday, and I was like, I could do that as well,” Lee continued. “Just went to a heavier shaft, stronger shaft with the driver, and the hybrid this week. It's working well. I feel like the misses have been smaller and less spin, and obviously the new putter has been really good, too.”

The Australian's equipment change paid off, as he rose to T6 in round two.

Min Woo Lee Opens Up on the Decisions That Helped Him

The 27-year-old’s driving skills are commendable. However, he was aware that he needed to improve control and focus, especially on the approach.

“Approach play needed to get better,” Min Woo Lee admitted.

“And then the putting, if that could cooperate, then it can become I guess lethal. The last couple weeks have kind of showed that. And just putting four good rounds together. It's tough, but it seems like the game, I'm getting more confident in my game, which is nice," he added.

And that confidence is certainly showing early on in the season. Min Woo Lee started the season with a T38 finish at the American Express, improved to T26 at the Phoenix Open, and finished in T2 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Whether these changes can sustain his top-ten position through the final round remains to be seen.
