“No Disrespect to These Guys:” John Daly Once Offered a Logical Take On the Tiger vs Jack GOAT Debate

Just a few months ago, John Daly appeared on the Like a Farmer Podcast, where he talked about his golf stories, Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

That's when host Pat Spinosa asked Daly about his opinion on the debate between Nicklaus and Woods.

“I don’t think you can choose one over the other. I think Jack is the greatest of all time player because of his record. But I still think Tiger is the greatest player of all time,” Jack said.

“And the reason I say that, no disrespect to these guys that won all these majors back in the day, but look where Tiger… Every guy, when Tiger came out, could win a tournament. When Jack played, he was playing his 12 to 15, maybe 20 guys. And I’m not disrespecting it. It’s just the record will show.”

Daly’s reasoning centered on competitive depth. Back when Nicklaus played, his primary competition was Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, and Byron Nelson.

For Woods, the competition has been stiff in the last two decades. From players like Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau, Jordan Spieth, to less-known stars like Rich Beem, Woods was facing competitors throughout.

Rather than inflaming the debate, Daly’s take reframed it. Nicklaus owns the benchmark record, while Woods reshaped what dominance looked like against deeper, more global competition.

But there was a time when Daly stood stronger in favor of Tiger Woods

After winning the PNC Championship with his son, John Daly II, the 59-year-old golfer made a major claim. “He's [Tiger Woods] probably gonna beat Jack Nicklaus' records and be the greatest of all time,” Daly stood strong in his views.

As of now, Woods has 15 victories in professional golf major championships. He’s trailing behind in second place. The first spot is taken by Jack Nicklaus, who has amassed 18 major tournament wins.
