Cameron Young achieved a landmark win at the 2026 PLAYERS Championship by overcoming the psychological obstacles the TPC Sawgrass posed. A good laugh can be just as important as a good swing!

With a tie for the lead alongside Matt Fitzpatrick, as Young stepped up to the 18th tee, he battled the mental stress that came with the course's infamous "booby traps" and the ghosts of his previous close calls.

When asked about what conversation ensued between Young and his caddie after the shot on 18, which made them smile and laugh, the golfer answered.

"Man, what did we say? I have no idea. We were just saying stuff, I think, to just kind of quiet our own minds. In those moments there's a lot running through your head, and for me to have Kyle, one of my best friends, on the bag sitting there, it's a really nice time to have something a little bit lighter in terms of conversation."

The instant decision to keep it light-hearted was a way to keep his mind off the tension of a stagnating championship. He added, "I could have stared at my feet walking all the way down the fairway or we could have looked around and had a little bit of a laugh. I think in the moment option two was a good call."

The decision was indeed good, and it helped Young keep calm to handle the last putting green. And it made way for a new phase in his professional career.

Contrasting Experiences in Pressure and Preparation

This high-pressure setting contrasts with Young's prior professional win at the Wyndham Championship. In that event, he built a huge lead that eliminated anxiety for the final round.

"I made the turn with a nine-shot lead or whatever at Wyndham, and didn't have the slightest bit of nerves," Young said of the Wyndham experience and compared with the Sawgrass experience.

Every single swing was a mental drain for Young at Sawgrass, who had to be hyper-focused on the details of his environment to avoid getting lost in the mentally distracting aspects of the setting.

"I looked at my feet the entire time I was walking down the fairways, so I asked myself where my feet were," was one way Young described his focus.

Winning this time was special because his family was there. During his Wyndham victory, his wife and kids were over 2,500 miles from him.

Young stated, "To get to see them after I went and did my interviews and stuff and got to actually, you know, give my boys a hug, see my wife, see my little girl, that's something I'll remember for a long time."

Cameron Young's mental strength has brought him to the pinnacle of professional golf. With the Masters Tournament approaching, fans are intrigued to see whether this "option two" mentality will earn him his first major championship.
